Bullards in the News

As some of you may have seen in the news over the past week, we’ve recently been in the midst of a trademark dispute regarding our name – Bullards.

To some, it’s simply a name, but to us it’s a word which carries the weight of more than 180 years of history. And one that we’d like to protect for future developments.

Anchored in Norwich since 1837

In 1837, as Queen Victoria was celebrating the first year of her reign, Richard Bullard founded The Anchor Brewery on Westwick Street, Norwich. The gorgeous River Wensum flowed close to the brewery walls, offering a prosperous placement for the brewery at the heart of the community, and provided work for hundreds of men and women in the city.

After Richard’s passing in 1864, the firm continued as BULLARD & SONS and prospered over the next few years. By the end of the century Bullards occupied a seven-acre site, producing the finest beer around and becoming an integral part of the social history of Norwich.

With a successful name and many pubs owned by Bullards, Watney Mann began buying shares and by 1963, Bullards succumbed to its takeover. Sadly, only three years later in 1966, Watney closed the Anchor Brewery and the iconic landmark Bullards chimney was demolished.

But not all was lost…

In the 1980’s, Russell Evans worked with Bullards and instantly developed an affinity for the brand. Reconnecting with John Bullard, a descendant of the original brewery founder, Russell revived the great Bullards name and focused on the production of handcrafted, artisanal gin.

Bullards Spirits emerged, with the weight of 180 years of history in its name and a lot of plans ahead of it, inspired by the past but designed for the future.

Bullards stands for the past reimagined, for innovation, growth and evolution and we can’t wait for you to see what’s in store for the future.
